We were delighted to receive our Rights Respecting Schools Level 1 status in November 2009 in recognition for all the hard work we had done on the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). However, we were keen to ensure that it didn’t stop there. We are currently working towards Level 2 which focuses more on the global dimension as well as full embedding the UNCRC across the entire school.

Rights Respecting Ambassadors
Every class has nominated a representative to be a Rights Respecting Ambassador to work alongside the Rights Respecting Co-ordinator. This enables every child within the school to feel as though they have a ‘voice’ and will be listened to. Regular meetings are held for the ambassadors during which important decisions are made regarding RRS issues.
Federation Charter
As a newly federated school, we felt that it was important to confirm our belief in children’s rights and responsibilities, emphasise how people should be treated and the ways in which we wanted to learn. The school councillors from both schools (Infants and Juniors) came together to share ideas and work out what the federation charter should look like.
National and International Links
We are now in our 10th year of writing pen pal letters to Avondale Park Primary School (Inner London) and 4th year of linking with Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya (Sri Lanka). This writing project is designed to create friendships, help others as they learn English and develop knowledge of the wider world.

Send My Friend Campaign
For the last three years we have taken part in the ‘Send My Friend’ campaign which is designed to encourage world leaders to work towards Education for all children. When we started supporting this campaign, 75 million children were unable to go to school. Now this figure is closer to 69 million. The aim is to see all children in school by 2015.
Fairtrade Fortnight 2011
The school council have requested that we research the possibility of having a ‘healthy food’ tuck-shop for Fairtrade Fortnight 2011. As we are already working towards healthier eating and drinking at break times, this seems like a fantastic idea. If we can organise this event, we will be asking the Rights Respecting Ambassadors and School Councillors to actively participate in it.
