Our pupils were inspired during a visit from Megan Pascoe, a member of the British Paralympic Sailing Squad. Through assemblies, Megan talked to the children about what it’s like to be a Paralympian and her vision for the future taking part in this years Paralympic Games.

Following on from the Lower School assembly, Megan was able to tour the Year 3 and 4 classes to show her medals, take questions from the children and explain the Paralympic values of Determination, Courage, Equality and Inspiration.

We all wish her the best of luck in the forthcoming months and will be tracking her progress in the sailing events.

Back at the beginning of this year the [...]]]> Earlier today, Wyke Regis Junior School celebrated the unveiling of the 2012 Mosaic. This unique piece of art has been given the prime position at the front of the school for all of the community to appreciate and enjoy.

Back at the beginning of this year the School Council decided that they wanted to celebrate the Olympics 2012 in an artistic way. They wanted to create a lasting legacy of this special occasion and to extend the learning they had done throughout the term in classes. In order to fully explore the talent across the school and involve all pupils, a competition was held to come up with a unique design. The themes for the piece of art were based on the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics values of respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality.

As a result of the competition, seven designs stood out and impressed our local artist, Judy Baker. She incorporated all of the designs into the final version. All of their spectacular designs have, in a variety of ways, created one fabulous Mosaic. Not only has it expressed the Olympic Values, it has captured the spirit of the local area.

Despite the very wet weather, Year 4 had a great time at Leeson House last week.They particularly enjoyed pond dipping, orienteering, Studland beach, a 3 mile walk and a village study of Worth Matravers. The hot chocolate at bedtime also went down a treat! Here are some photos of [...]]]>

Despite the very wet weather, Year 4 had a great time at Leeson House last week.They particularly enjoyed pond dipping, orienteering, Studland beach, a 3 mile walk and a village study of Worth Matravers. The hot chocolate at bedtime also went down a treat! Here are some photos of the visit.

A quick update on just how amazingly successful our sports relief efforts have been. We have raised and amazing £2689 so far. This is not including the extra money we will get from the government as part of the gift aid scheme.

21st of April 2012 – A giant image of the Queen made up of thousands of self-portaits of school children is set to break a world record for the most artists working on the same art installation. Wyke junior participated in this event by submitting well over 200 portraits.

 

The spectacular 50-ft collage of her majesty was beamed onto the front of Buckingham Palace as part of the Face Britain project. More than 200,000 people – including school pupils and a clutch of celebrities – contributed to the huge montage by submitting their own self-portraits online. As well as the projection on the Royal residence, the montage portrait of the Queen was screened across other UK cities up and down the country.

Year 4 have had a very busy half term learning all about Romans in Britain. They visited Maiden Castle and Dorchester Museum to find out about the Romans attacking the Celts at Maiden Castle and building the town of  Durnovaria (Dorchester).

Year 4 have had a very busy half term learning all about Romans in Britain. They visited Maiden Castle and Dorchester Museum to find out about the Romans attacking the Celts at Maiden Castle and building the town of  Durnovaria (Dorchester).

Mr Stone, who became a very strict centurion for the day, taught the children what it was like to have a day in the Roman Army.

On Wednesday all the children and teachers dressed as Romans or Celts and spent the day making roundhouses, Celtic oatcakes and Roman chariots; they even ate a Roman style lunch complete with some sugar dormice! There were some wonderful hairstyles and amazing soldiers’ outfits.

The children worked really hard to present an assembly, ‘Rotten Romans’ in which they shared with  parents and pupils in other year groups all about this term’s learning. They sang songs, made scenery and props ,acted and played their recorders wonderfully.

Well done Year 4.

The [...]]]> Year 5 would like to say thank you to all the children, parents and carers who supported our maths cafe this year. The cakes that the children from across the school provided were beautifully presented and delicious.

The year 5 children were fantastic their jobs as waiters, cashiers, drinks assistants, photographers and hosts. The cafe offers a great opportunity for children to practice maths in a real life practical situation, and we certainly all enjoy being customers too!

Particular thanks to Mrs Darby, Mrs White and Mrs McKevitt for all their hard work in the cafe. We have raised a lot of money for Ted the child we sponsor at our Kenyan link school. Well done everybody!
